Why the Name "Sapphire"?
Sapphires are the historical birthstone for the month of September, my birth month, so I’ve always liked them. And as many people know, they’re one of the most precious gemstones in the world (along with diamonds, rubies, and emeralds). But there’s so much more to this fascinating and precious gem.
Since ancient times, the sapphire has been associated with wisdom, kindness, good judgment, and enlightenment, revered in many world religions and cultures as a stone of royalty and divinity.
The ancient Greeks wore sapphire for wisdom when consulting the oracle at Delphi. The Hebrews of the Old Testament considered it a stone of prophecy and wisdom – it’s said that the Ten Commandments were given to Moses on tablets of sapphire, and that wise King Solomon wore a ring of sapphire as a talisman. In Buddhism, the sapphire is believed to help facilitate spiritual enlightenment, and Hindus believe that it can assist in worship by combining powerful astrological influences. In Christianity, the sapphire has been associated with angels and Heaven, and cardinals and Popes in the Roman Catholic Church wear rings of sapphire.
Today, sapphires remain powerful symbols. They represent commitment, integrity, and faithfulness, and they’re believed by some to promote joy, faith, hope, and protection during long journeys. And in energy healing, the blue sapphire is used to help balance the throat chakra, the voice of the body, associated with expressing what we think and feel.
This is why I love the sapphire! One of the strongest gemstones in the world and associated with wisdom, divinity, integrity, joy, protection, and open communication - what new marriage couldn’t benefit from those glorious properties?
